buffering...

So Kristina and I were lamenting the lameness (kee) of our stupid publisher website video on WebCT and how pretty much every 3 nanoseconds it needs to buffer again and we thought it would be a good idea for people to start having a little sign (or maybe a forehead LED message window?) that said, "Buffering..." So whenever someone started asking you to do something and you were already busy you could just flash them the "Buffering..." sign and they would have no choice but to wait til you were done buffering and then tell/give/show/make you whatever they wanted... It only seems fair that (in my completely unsubstantiated opinion but I bet that Tipping Point guy will write a book on it) since all the multi-tasking and general interrupty-ness of our society can be linked directly to technology's effect on how we approach (notice I didn't say "achieve") daily tasks, we should have a way to stay the interruptions on occasion just like technology does to us on a regular basis....

Or am I the only one who feels like I spend all my time doing the Fred Flintstone rev on an oil slick? I think people who only do stuff on computer can get stuff done (there are those who are sucked into the Internet all too often... ahem...) and the people who deal chiefly with other people can get stuff done (tho there are those interminable no-progress meetings that seem to be more and more common...) but if you have to deal with both computers AND people you really have the cards stacked against you.

OK well sure, unless you're, like, PRODUCTIVE or DISCIPLINED or something. (Read: a robot or an extraterrestrial or on really interesting drugs.)

Oh, come on now. Don't anybody write me and tell me how I'm the only one and how you get all kinds of stuff done on a regular basis, etc..... I'm busy....

...(you guessed it)...

I am pretty sure if I was on drugs, the last thing I would accomplish would be work on a computer or in a meeting. :)

that's why I tempered it with "interesting" ! :)

my job is computers and people.

meetings and phone and email. every call generates more work. even resolution calls generate more work.

i am constantly jumping around from task to task and only finish anything when there is a "deadline," and then only because i've had three to eight uninterrupted hours - at home on the weekend - to do it.

Honto yo! I honestly can't figure out if we're better off with all the technology or not? many times I think not...
